We haven't tested a rugged phone in a long time, but now the Doogee S98 is here, which kicks the door on the market with its unusual appearance. In addition to the usual rugged phone capabilities, it also boasts such things as the secondary display on the back, the "night vision" camera, but I could also mention the relatively new Helio G96 central core. To this, they added 8 GB of RAM, 256 GB of storage, a lot of cameras and ports, so basically everything on earth is at your disposal. However, they ask for the price, in a pre-order sale it costs HUF 119, delivery is an additional HUF 000. VAT is paid by Banggood for its products, so you should not have such problems with the Doogee S2300 either.

At the bottom you will find a mono speaker and the Type-C port protected by a silicone door, and if you look inside the box, you will find the charger in addition to the cable, which It is capable of 33 W, which is how much you can quickly charge the phone, which is not bad. THE 6000 mAh battery so it can be fully charged in a little less than 2 hours, and depending on usage, it can easily last for 2-3 days. What is much more interesting is that can also charge 15 W wirelessly, which means you don't have to constantly remove the silicone plug and push the Type-C cable deep, so this kind of thing is useful and practical for a strapamobile.

In addition to the above-mentioned, the box also contains a description, a screen protector - which I hate to put on, I don't know why the manufacturer doesn't solve this in advance -, a cleaning cloth, and a special tool for opening the metal SIM tray, because this is not recommended with a fingernail, because it is easy you can break off, I mean your nails. It can accept two nano-sized SIM cards and 1 micro SD, the tray is the size of an airplane runway, which is very rare nowadays. On the right side, there is the volume control and screen unlock button, and below it is the fingerprint reader, while on the opposite side is a parameterizable switch, which can be used for SOS, compass, GPS and similar functions. Perhaps one thing is missing, there is no infrared port, but there is a notification LED and, of course, many other sensors as well.

Like most rugged phones, the S98 is packed with all kinds of sensors, accelerometer, compass, gyroscope, pedometer, light sensor, dual WiFi, GPS, NFC, just to name the most important ones. The S98 has it a Pro version also in which there is also a thermal imaging sensor, this function, however, was not given to sima. The most interesting, however, is the previously mentioned rear display, which is a multi-functional circular touch panel. It mostly works like the panel of a sports watch, it wakes up when lifted and shows one of the following functions, but of course the interface can be scrolled like a smart watch:

  • time, date, charge
  • alarm clock
  • music playback
  • show incoming calls
  • notifications (I haven't figured out how to do this)

To be honest, it's a little weird to control things from here,

I forcibly unlocked the phone the first 20 times and set everything up from there, because it didn't even occur to me to do the same from the back. So it takes some getting used to, but other than that, it's good. It's not like there's any point in picking up the call from here, if you can still see on the display, just as music control is easier to do from headphones or a smart watch than to dig out the brutally large and rather heavy, Device weighing 320 grams. However, I am glad that there is such an option on the market, consumers do not have to have the same taste in everything.

Doogee S98 Rugged Phone - Hardware isn't everything, but it could be

Regarding the rugged phones they typically save on hardware. The customer gets all sorts of other things anyway, so why not tighten the belt right here? It can be, if it doesn't come at the expense of speed and usability, and in this case, fortunately, it doesn't, even if it's not a power plant.

The MTK Helio G96 chip works under the cover,

which is technologically not a very old solution, but it is 12 nanometers, despite the fact that TSM and Samsung are already experimenting with 4 nm. This SoC already knows quite a lot, but e.g. it does not support 5G, you must renounce this. This is complemented by 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage, which can be expanded with micro SD. Let's see what the benchmarks show: According to Antutu, it scored 248 points and GFXBenchen scored 000 FPS, while the A63's SD speed test showed 1 and 465 Mbps.

How much exactly does a product cost?

For the sake of simplicity, we always convert the USD prices into forints in our articles, usually according to the calculator on the given page. However, the reality is that your bank exchanges the currency HUF 4-5 worse than the interbank exchange rate, which means that the product always costs a little more than the stated price.

You can help by ordering these completely free bank cards, a Revolut, Monese and Curve also offer this – for the latter, you get 5 GBP for free, in the app D4WGX4ZE use a coupon code - or the menu bar at the top #fintech click on the label to read our posts on the topic.

These are decent results, but still more like an extra category of nothing.

It beats the Redmi Note 11 by a little more – there is an SD 680 in it – while the Little M4 Pro 5G already easily suppresses the S98. So this is the performance of a lower mid-range phone, you can play with Asphalt and Ark: Survival on it, because these programs already rescale themselves quite well, but it still won't be a gamer phone. His voice is quite weak, and since the speaker is only mono, it is easy to cover the sound source with your hands. I think the display is unnecessarily large, the brightness of the 1080*2340 pixel IPS panel is only 480 nits, but I would have been happier with a Full HD display with higher brightness. If only because the extra pixels in most cases appear as unnecessary black bars below and above the contents.

The operating system is fresh and crisp Android 12,

which surprised me a little, these phones are not usually so up-to-date. There is nothing disturbing, there are one or two unique apps, such as the "children's area", Game Turbo or Outdoor Toolbox, with which you can use all kinds of rugged phone things - pendulum, distance and angle meter, noise level meter, etc. – can be set. There's also Easy Launcher, which turns the phone into a "big phone" with simplified functions and huge buttons.

You can also use FM radio if you plug in an earphone, but since there is no jack port, you have to do this with a Type-C adapter. Perhaps the most interesting is the "smart button", to which three different functions can be attached, for me the voice recording, screenshot and flashlight options were added here, for the latter a dedicated LED is at your disposal on the back panel. Interesting that I couldn't find a glove mode in the operating system, so the S98 is not so much a worker's phone.

As for the camera section, this is not usually the strength of rugged phones, but the lineup is still interesting:

  • 64 MP main sensor
  • 20 MP Sony IMX350 night vision sensor with 2 additional infrared sensors
  • 8 MP wide-view sensor
  • 16 MP selfie camera

They could discover two interesting things, on the one hand there is no unnecessary macro camera, the other is that the company claims that one of the cameras has night vision. Before I tested this in more depth, I looked at what the software can do, because there are interesting things in it. One is that have a "Night Vision" - so, as I said, the Hungarian translation is missing in some places - with which you can shoot black and white pictures with the help of the infrared sensors and the 20 MP unit. Unfortunately, there are no videos, which is a shame, however has particularly high image quality – this uses the 64 MP main sensor – option, Respectively night photograph, GIF generator, Pro mode - which is called professional here -, scanner and other clever things, so it's good that they differed from the basic Android interface.

As for the quality of the pictures, I didn't faint, to put it mildly.

However, we are talking about a HUF 120 phone here, so the final result is not very glorious compared to that. The pictures of the 000 MP sensor are not bad, but there are already strong competitors in this price range who not only squeeze, but also beat the S64. The trick is that if you are not using the main sensor, but shooting traditional images, then you can only shoot 4:3 aspect ratio or 19:9 images that fill the entire display, but e.g. Not 1:1 or 16:9. The colors of the wide-angle camera are quite different from those of the main sensor, and the edges are also blurry, so let's skip the part where I try to elevate the camera skills. But what surprised me was the night vision section, which is quite good. Near objects can be seen perfectly at night with the help of infrared sensors, while the night shots bring so-so quality, but usually this is where the cameras perform the worst, so I wouldn't get involved in this specifically.

I can't classify the videos anywhere other than the terrible category.

First of all, no 4K, even though it was 2 years ago when the Little X3 NFC, then it was already able to stabilize this resolution, approx. for half as much. In comparison, the S98 can record in 2K and 1080p, but don't expect any EIS/OIS or similar functions, the image wobbles like a three-legged table. His voice is pretty good, but I kept getting nauseous from shaking while watching the recording, so if you're moving, the end result will be very sad. It still works from a standing position, the colors aren't bad, the focus doesn't drag either, but that's the "sweet little" category. What's for sure is that it burns the sky properly, not that it can't be connected to anything else.

Summary

The Doogee S98, which is one, has become an interesting mutant eccentric rugged phone. It has its virtues, but perhaps it would be better to call them quirks. What I didn't like about it was the price, HUF 119 is quite strong, although the HUF fell to a historic low against the dollar at the very moment the article was being written, so why are we surprised? The camera section is not very strong,  but it never happens in the strapa category, or even more so due to the design a few sensors and ports were left out, such as NFC, jack and infrared port. And the central core does not know 5G, so you have to cross that off your wish list. I wouldn't comment on the look, let everyone decide whether it suits them or not.

The hardware is fine though, not very bullish, but not weak either, and the display is not bad either, only a smaller, brighter one would have been better. You get a lot of memory and storage, the operating system is fresh and stable, the phone is resistant, it charges quickly, and also with two solutions, there are a lot of sensors, and the programmable button is very useful. The rear display doesn't make much sense, but it's also interesting, and it doesn't hurt that it's there. The price, however, is yes, I feel this is for many people 119 000 FtDue to the conversion rates of the webshops, the prices may differ for different currencies (e.g. if you set the webshop to HUF, the prices are usually higher than if you set it to USD). The prices indicated in the article are informative and in all cases are HUF equivalents of the price displayed on the webshop's interface in USD (or in EUR, if there is no USD option) (according to the interbank exchange rate valid at the time of writing the article)., on which the additional HUF 2300 for delivery is added. VAT is paid by Banggood for its products, so you should not have such problems with the Doogee S98 either.
