Republic of Gamers - alias ROG - is the gamer sub-brand of ASUS, which brings together target peripherals made specifically for gamers. Countless professional gamers from around the world have been hired by ASUS to validate the cutting-edge technology they put behind their peripherals. It's here, one of the trendiest things right now are gamer mice marked with the ROG abbreviation.

Why is it out of stock?

The unspeakably long name ASUS ROG Harpe Ace Aim Lab Edition gamer mouse knows almost everything that can be flashed on this topic. The DPI value of 36 is probably class-leading, but the ROG 000M mechanical switches can also withstand 70 million clicks. But what's really rough is the software support. On the one hand, you can switch between different profiles with button combinations, and on the other hand, you can analyze your mouse usage with the Aim Lab Settings Optimizer. ASUS also cooperates with NVIDIA, and you can also measure the responsiveness of the mouse with the NVIDIA Reflex software.

What makes a gamer mouse a gamer

Everyone has seen a computer mouse, but it really doesn't matter whether it's a traditional, basically work-related rodent or a specialized piece for gaming. The latter can fulfill the tasks of the former, but there are requirements for suitability for the game, which both amateurs and professionals take into account.

Let's see what criteria users choose from the range of gamer mice:

  • adequate resolution sensor (high DPI/CPI)
  • sampling frequency (polling rate)
  • tracking speed (IPS)
  • the weight of the gamer mouse, and whether it can be changed
  • is the gamer mouse wired or wireless
  • ergonomics, the shape of the gamer mouse should match the hand position
  • the gamer mouse should be reliable, with great build quality (it should have the right parts)
  • the number of buttons, programmable and/or macro buttons
  • gamer mouse software and customization
  • and finally, what the gamer mouse looked like (e.g. is it LED)

Structure of the gamer mouse, main components

In order to understand what technical parameters a gamer mouse must meet, you must know how such a peripheral is built. Let's move from the outside in!

The exterior of the gamer mouse

Gamer mice are usually premium-priced products, which is why manufacturers pay particular attention to the materials they use. Usually, the surface is plastic - in some cases metal - which is covered with a pleasant-to-the-touch material - for example silicone - to make use as comfortable as possible. The advantage of harder materials is that they are more difficult to wear, but in return the grip of the gamer mouse is more unpleasant, while softer materials decay faster and can even peel off in layers, but they seem more ergonomic.

It is interesting that if a gamer mouse has a wired design, one of the parts that wears out the fastest is the cable itself, which you constantly drag on the table. That is why serious manufacturers pay particular attention to the covering of the cable, usually providing it with some kind of special covering.

The shape of the gamer's mouse

One of the most important ergonomic questions is what shape a gamer mouse should have. Several things should be taken into account: whether you are right- or left-handed, how you hold the mouse, and where certain buttons fall on the design. In general, it can be said that very specific shapes are uncomfortable, there is a well-established world of shapes that manufacturers follow.

Right or left handed

Most mice are designed for right-handed people, as they make up the vast majority of the population. This means that gamer mice are either asymmetrical - there is a small plate on the left side that the hand rests on, and the buttons are arranged on one side - or they are symmetrical, meaning it doesn't matter which hand you use. There are also left-handed mice, which are the mirror image of right-handed ones, but this is not produced in all types.

Consequently, we recommend left-handed people to choose a symmetrical mouse, if they cannot find a special left-handed one. In English, they are referred to as ambidextrous, i.e. two-handed.

What hand position did you use to mouse?

In connection with the use of peripherals, there are basically 3 grips that usually arise, they differ from each other in how the palm lies and how curved the fingers are. Based on these, three hand positions are distinguished: palm grip, claw or claw grip, and fingertip grip. The difference between the three is that in the first the palm and fingers rest on the mouse, less in the case of the claw, while only the fingertips touch the surface of the mouse.

Gamer mice are produced for all three hand positions, in general, it can be said that gamer mice with a higher back, better tailored to the hand, favor palm grip, while for the other two, smaller, side-tapering or flat mice are better.

The importance of weight for a gamer mouse

The weight of gamer mice falls somewhere between 40-150 grams, the reason for this is that, in principle, lighter mice allow for more precise movement and make the hands less tired, but this is really only for professional gamers or those who work sitting for very long periods of time and constantly comes out in case of mice.

Gamer mice are typically quite light, but in the premium category there are models that can be equipped with weights, meaning that their weight can be customized.

Gamer mouse connection options

Basically, we distinguish between two big categories when it comes to gamer mice: wired or wireless. In the case of wired mice, you can connect them to the computer with a cable ending in a USB port. An important feature of wired gamer mice is that they are powered by the computer, so they do not need batteries or batteries. The delay of these mice - input lag in English - is in principle lower, typically below 1 ms, than in the case of wireless mice. This value shows how late the movement of the gamer mouse is followed by the movement of the cursor on the display.

Fortunately, nowadays the latency of wireless mice is also very low, approaching the similar value of their wired counterparts, at least according to the manufacturers' claims. Basically, there are two types of solutions, and there are gamer mice that support both at the same time: a Bluetooth connection or a radio frequency - called 2,4 GHz - USB adapter. In the former case, the peripheral communicates via the BT module of the computer or other device, in the latter case, an adapter called a dongle must be plugged into the USB port. If the gamer mouse has both, you can switch between the connections with the help of a button. Of the two, the BT connection is the more economical.

There are also gamer mice that can connect both wired and wirelessly. In the former case, not only does the signal pass through the cable, but the battery can also be charged via the USB port.

The gamer mouse should be powered or rechargeable

There are basically two types of wireless gamer mice on the market, battery-operated and battery-operated. The former can be considered a more modern and less polluting solution, and it is worth buying them instead. Most gaming mice charge their batteries either via a cable or by placing them on a small platform. In the former case, the mouse remains usable even while charging. The operating time of the mice correlates with the battery capacity, which is given in mAh, the typical value is 300-700 mAh.

The problem with battery solutions is that they run out in a few months, in which case the batteries have to be thrown away. Most gamer mice get the energy needed for operation from 2 AAA batteries, that is, until their microswitches fail, they use a 100 size battery. For this reason, on the one hand, their owners have to store a lot of elements, and on the other hand, such solutions also produce an awful lot of garbage. If possible, choose battery-powered solutions.
Wired gamer mice always receive power from the USB port, so you don't have to worry about charging them and their operating time is also "infinite".

How many buttons are there on a gamer mouse and why are there so many?

In fact, this is a very variable number, but every gamer mouse has at least one left and one right mouse button, a DPI adjuster, the wheel itself is also a button, and there is usually an additional microswitch on the side for scrolling the browser windows back and forth.

In addition, manufacturers usually include buttons for countless other functions in the housing of the gamer mouse, which can be programmed or macrosed. This means that the function of these switches can be adjusted, so you can load them with options as you like. For example, in the case of FPS games, weapons can go here, in the case of MMORPGs, spells or health and mana potions, but really you just have to figure out what you need.

Some mice can store multiple profiles, so you don't have to set everything up again for different games, you just have to switch the profile, but some can also switch automatically, depending on what you're playing.

What's under the hood

If you remove the cover of the gamer mouse, you can see a lot of parts. The inside of the mice consists of nothing but a printed circuit, on which you can see different parts. These parameters are quite important, not only because of your performance in the game, but also, for example, in terms of the lifespan of the gamer mouse.

The microswitch of the gamer mouse

There are micro switches under the gamer mouse buttons. There are two types of microswitches: mechanical and optical. The difference between the two is that:

The mechanical microswitches:

  • they can be easily produced
  • they have low energy consumption
  • they can be easily replaced
  • they have recoil due to the spring in them

The optical microswitches:

  • they give a very good response time
  • they have a longer lifespan
  • have higher energy consumption
  • they are more expensive

The most important properties of microswitches are as follows:

  • sound (tactile, clicky, muted, etc.)
  • lifetime (how many clicks it lasts)
  • operating force (calculated in grams - gf, i.e. gram force)
  • release force (calculated in grams)
  • the distance traveled by the switch (calculated in mm)

The above features can significantly change the feeling of use. For example, a gamer mouse with a higher pressure force, which is also loud, can not only tire the hands, but also disturb family members, and the response time - latency - affects the reaction time.

One of the most important features of microswitches is the number of clicks they can withstand during their lifetime, because if they break, then the gamer mouse typically does the same. A professional player, playing 3-5 hours a day, makes roughly 14 million clicks a year, while a sow player plays 1-2 hours a day, roughly 3 million a year. That's why it's worth checking how many clicks the switches of gamer mice, typically equipped with optical switches, can withstand during their lifetime.

Some of the best-known, big-name microswitch manufacturers:

  • Omron
  • Kaih
  • VAT Incl.
  • Cherry
  • Huano
  • Razer

The gamer mouse sensor

The gamer mouse detects its position on the mouse pad with the help of the optical CMOS sensor placed on its belly. In practice, this is done in such a way that the CMOS sensor collects the light reflected from the surface with the help of the built-in LED, and sends the various light changes to a processor - DSP - which determines in which direction the mouse has moved. The displacement data is sent by the DSP to the MCU, which in turn is sent to the computer that moves the mouse pointer on the monitor.

It can be guessed from the above that it really doesn't matter how quickly this happens. There is always a slight delay between the movement of the mouse and the real cursor movement, this is called input lag and is expressed in milliseconds. The millisecond value is obtained by dividing the second by the sampling frequency, i.e. 1000 Hz sampling means a delay of 1 ms. The larger the latter, the more confusing it becomes to use the mouse, and its value basically depends on several things:

  • from the sampling rate (polling rate, specified in Hz)
  • from the performance of the processor

The bottom line is that the higher the sampling rate and the faster the processing unit, the lower the latency. One of the best-known manufacturers is Pixar, their sensors are marked with the abbreviation PAW.

The wheel of the gamer mouse

Every mouse has a roller, which performs scrolling, i.e. moving the content of the page up and down. In most cases, this is also a button, but the most important thing is the ergonomics of scrolling. In the case of more expensive gamer mice, the feeling of scrolling – its resistance, speed – can usually be adjusted.

Gamer Mouse Controller (MCU)

MCU stands for microcontroller unit, which is the central microprocessor in mice. This unit collects, processes and transmits the data coming from the other components, that is, it handles the USB port, microswitch information, sensor data, and so on. Basically, the type of MCU does not play a huge role in choosing a gamer mouse, but it is still important from the point of view of, for example, what sampling frequency it supports (the higher it is, the less the cursor movement is delayed).

The point is that there should be no products of some unknown brand in the mice, but often the manufacturers themselves do not specify exactly what components are in the peripheral. Some of the best known manufacturers are:

  • Cypress
  • SoNix
  • NXP
  • STMicroelectronics
  • Freescale
  • Elan
  • MLT04
  • SunplusIT
  • Nordic
  • Broadcom
  • CX

Advantages and disadvantages of a gamer mouse

Basically, not everyone needs a gamer mouse, but those who have bought one for themselves once, will keep it next to them, even if they don't play or only play a little. Nevertheless, such a supplement has not only advantages, but also disadvantages, which we will now take a look at.

Advantages of gamer mice:

  • they are durable and designed for a long service life
  • they are comfortable, they are characterized by a better than average use of materials
  • they can be programmed, which also comes in handy during work
  • pleasant feeling of use, in many cases this can also be regulated (e.g. changing the resistance of the roller)
  • anyone who likes LEDs will love these too
  • in many cases, they are able to connect to several devices, which you can switch between with the push of a button
  • they usually have great software support

Disadvantages of gaming mice:

  • they are expensive
  • not everyone likes unconventional, futuristic shapes
  • some users may be bothered by the sea of buttons that are not used for anything

How to choose a gamer mouse for yourself?

Basically, you have to decide whether you do office work in front of a computer, whether you are a casual gamer or a real professional gamer, or whether you want to be one. In the next step, you have to choose whether you want a symmetric or asymmetric - right-handed or left-handed - mouse, as well as which hand position you use. Obviously, comfort also includes the quality of the material used.

If you are beyond that, then you can ask the wired or wireless question. Many people don't like having to drag a wire across the table, while many hardcore gamers believe in low latency and minimal input lag, which is why they prefer only wired solutions and hate charging. Wireless mice also have the advantage that they can be used with several computers at the same time, although this is not usually a deciding factor.

If you are aware of these, it is worth looking at the technical parameters of the mice. Obviously, the better they are, the more you will have to pay for the gamer mouse. What matters:

  • DPI: dot per inch, the higher it is, the more the cursor moves on the screen per unit of mouse movement, roughly synonymous with sensitivity. This parameter can almost always be adjusted and the higher the value, the faster. Some manufacturers use the abbreviation CPI.
  • sampling frequency: how often the mouse samples its own position. In some cases, you need to purchase an additional adapter for sampling above 1000 Hz. Here the higher value is better.
  • microswitch type and service life: almost exclusively very durable optical microswitches designed for many presses are used in the case of gamer mice or they are combined with solutions simulating mechanical clicks. The higher the value, the more durable it is.
  • crowd: according to our experience, it's quite a unique thing, who suits what. Not everyone likes lightweight mice, individual needs can best be met with weighted variants.
  • force and sound of button operation: this is more of a matter of convenience, it also belongs to the topic of who likes what.
  • operating time: if you choose a battery-powered gamer mouse, this is an important aspect. Here too, the higher the value, the better.

It would be a shame to deny that aesthetics are also very important in the case of computer accessories, so if you are beyond the above parameters, choose a gamer mouse that you like, because you will really like using it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the DPI and how much is needed for gamer mice?

Abbreviation of dot per inch, one of the typical poster data of gamer mice, which manufacturers constantly compete with each other to increase. Basically, it affects the sensitivity of the mouse cursor movement, it tells how much the mouse pointer moves on the screen for a given hand movement.

Adjustable DPI plays a very important role in games, as different game styles require different settings. In FPS - First Person Shooter - you have to aim very precisely, which can only be done at low settings, while in the case of RTS games, a higher value is better, where you have to switch between units or scroll on the map a lot due to the abundance of micromanagement. Almost every gamer mouse has a DPI adjustment switch - in many cases on the top of the mouse, but sometimes on the bottom - with which you can adjust this value in several steps.

Some manufacturers - e.g. SteelSeries uses the abbreviation CPI - counts per inch - instead of DPI, which refers more directly to the sensitivity of the mouse.

Which is the best gaming mouse?

It's an almost impossible question, and it's closely related to your goals and budgets. The larger a manufacturer's Asia, the more they usually charge for their mice. These were the top 10 manufacturers in 2023, based on revenue:

  • Logitech
  • Razer
  • ASUS
  • Roccat
  • HyperX
  • SteelSeries
  • Wow
  • Corsair
  • Glorious
  • BenQ

There are also manufacturers flying under the radar - mainly Chinese - that are not particularly well marketed, but have a quality offer in terms of parts. Without claiming to be exhaustive: Rapoo, Attack Shark, Dareu, Motospeed, Redragon, Delux, Kysona, Lamzu, Pulsar, Phylina, Puretrak, Thunderobot, VGN, Zaopin, Machenike and I could list more.

What gamer mouse should people with small hands buy?

A small hand comes with a small mouse, especially if you mouse with a claw or fingertip grip. You can find such models in the range of almost all serious companies, for example, Razer Viper Mini, Redragon M711, Logitech G305, and so on.

Gamer mouse with charging station - Does it make sense?

Years ago, Razer started this format with the Mamba gamer mouse. The bottom line is that there are charging contacts on the bottom of the mouse, so if you put it on the corresponding magnetic charging station, you can also charge it through it. The disadvantage is that you can't use the peripherals, the advantage is that it looks damn good, the charging station can also have LEDs, and in some cases it also functions as a USB dock, such as in the case of the Attack Shark X6 gamer mouse.

How to maintain a gamer mouse?

Basically, gamer mice are not really high-maintenance devices. Since there are no "ball" peripherals, the mechanical parts do not really need to be replaced, with the exception of the mechanical microswitches, which get tired after a few million clicks. Optical switches, on the other hand, can withstand tens of millions of clicks, which can last for years. There are Teflon-coated "pads" on the bottom of the mice, which can wear out, and these sometimes need to be replaced, and in non-battery-based wireless solutions, the battery sometimes runs out, which, by definition, also needs to be replaced.

Should I choose a wired or wireless gaming mouse?

A very long-standing debate, some swear by this, some swear by that. The advantage of wired gamer mice is high reliability and the complete absence of anomalies arising from charging. It is also not incidental that their delay is almost zero, and in terms of knowledge, they bring what their wireless counterparts have. In fact, some models can work in both wired and wireless mode, so you can try out the differences in person. On the other hand, it should be taken into account that the cable can get stuck, which can be disturbing while playing, and can also be damaged and worn, although the cable of better quality gamer mouse types is provided with a coating that is particularly durable.

Wireless is basically a convenience factor. There is no cable on the table, it can be put away anytime, anywhere, the gamer mouse adapter does not necessarily occupy a USB port on the computer, and it looks cool when the LEDs flash pulsating while it is being charged at the charging station. Moreover, the latency of modern wireless gamer mice is already very low, so it is hardly a disadvantage for non-professionals to use them. Solutions that support multiple devices are also able to connect to the computer using BT and radio frequency USB adapters.

Is Bluetooth or 2,4 GHz better?

It's no coincidence that all wireless gamer mice come with a 2,4 GHz radio frequency receiver. Although Bluetooth is a very widespread and universal standard, it has the disadvantage that the reception can be disrupted relatively easily and its delay is much longer than that of radio solutions. All in all, it is a good extra if the gamer mouse also has a Bluetooth connection, but you prefer to use the 2,4 GHz dongle for gaming.

What are the costs of a gamer mouse?

In addition to the purchase, if the gamer mouse is battery-powered, its replacement and the periodic replacement of the previously mentioned Teflon-coated pads may appear on the cost side.

What price category gamer mouse should I choose?

Basically, whatever your wallet allows. It should be known that the quality and knowledge never increase proportionally with the price, that is, if you are not a professional gamer, but you want the best gamer mouse for yourself, then you have to pay an extra premium for it, but it is not certain that you will be able to use it technical knowledge of the product.

In the case of big-name gamer mice, the brand name itself also means an extra premium, in return you will get better warranty terms, product support, customer service and a higher level of quality control. To make things a little more concrete with prices:

  • HUF 0-15: it is difficult to find a good gamer mouse in this price range, very basic rodents from well-known manufacturers and more serious gamer mice from Chinese manufacturers fit here.
  • HUF 15-30: for this money, you can get quite serious stuff even from the market-leading companies, and the Chinese like to sell mice equipped with high-end sensors in this category.
  • Above HUF 30: this is where the top mice start, and even then we underestimated the costs. For extremely popular peripherals intended for professional gamers, they easily ask for more than HUF 000, especially if it's Razer.

Do budget gamer mice make sense?

Basically yes. One of the hallmarks of budget is the lower price, which you can achieve not only by choosing a different model, but also by buying a cheaper sensor-equipped version of the same gamer mouse. This is typically the case with the Machenike M7 Pro, where the gamer mouse can be ordered with PAW3395 instead of PAW3104, which significantly reduces the price. It is also worth avoiding charging station and bundle packages, as these also increase the price, but of course there are exceptions to this.

What are the preferred materials for a gamer mouse?

Silicone-covered or other plastic-coated peripherals are usually used in the gamer mouse segment. In almost all cases, there is some kind of surface treatment on them that improves the feeling of quality. In some places, the upper part is perforated to give the palm better ventilation or to reduce the weight, but the frame and the surface can also be made of aluminum. Not everyone likes the touch of this latter material, due to its coldness, but it creates a very high-quality overall effect.

Is RGB lighting necessary?

RGB lighting is a design element on gamer mice. It looks good, you can program it to your liking, it adds to the mood, but if you don't like it, you can turn it off. It is basically irrelevant whether a peripheral contains an LED or not.

How many button mice do I need for gaming?

Almost every gamer mouse has switches for the basic functions, which play the role of left and right click, scroll wheel, DPI selector, forward and backward scrolling, and of course there are macro switches. How much of this you need depends primarily on what you use your gaming mouse for. Those who play MMORPG and FPS genres use the most of these.

What does the IPS parameter of gamer mice show?

IPS stands for inches per second, which is the maximum distance the mouse can travel in one second before the sensors are unable to track the movement. In the case of modern gamer mice, the IPS value is around 650, that is, a distance of 650 inches - 1651 cm - can be covered in one second with the mouse on the pad, which the sensors can still process.

Why do some gamer mice need an additional adapter?

One of the important values of gamer mice is the sampling frequency, or polling rate in English terms. An average gamer mouse can perform 1000 samples per second, which means a delay of 1 ms. Manufacturers are also able to produce hardware that fulfills higher values of 4 kHz and 8 kHz, but for this you need to plug a separate adapter into the USB port, which you typically have to buy separately for gamer mice. With this method, the delay can be reduced to 0,125 ms.
