To understand what a TV box is, we need to go back 10-15 years to the time when the first smart TVs appeared. These devices could do more than a traditional TV in that they integrated a mini-computer, usually with an Android system, which provides various smart functions - streaming, playing games, installing apps, etc. – is designed to load, but their most important feature is that you can network with them. It is also a relatively typical way of using them that they can save data on the data storage connected to them - HDD, SSD - or play media from there. How does the smart TV work?

Smart TVs are actually mini computers just like mini PCs, except that they typically have much weaker hardware and run some kind of targeted software. That is why they can be much cheaper than mini PCs. Since smart TVs have to be somehow connected to the display - which can be not only a TV, but also a projector, for example - they are usually equipped with countless ports - HDMI, USB, Ethernet, etc. - have. The software running on them is almost always some Android version, if you're lucky, a dumb target software that has been optimized to cover the functions of the TV smart.

Now let's see what to look for on the hardware and what makes it good.

The central core of the smart TV, the processor

The heart of every computer is the integrated processor. Since they always try to make TV smart devices with a relatively low budget - at least the Chinese manufacturers -, their most typical central cores are Rockchip and Amlogic, but Nvidia, for example, uses Tegra chips.

It really doesn't matter what is installed in the TV box, because countless compression methods are also supported by hardware - e.g. H.264 and H.265 - and it (also) depends on whether, for example, a 4K 60 FPS content can be played at a suitable speed by the iron.

System memory, also known as RAM, is the area where the machine loads currently running programs and data waiting to be processed. Although sharpened and optimized target software basically consumes little RAM, the same cannot necessarily be said for applications. It is worth following the principle of more is better, although some systems - for example, Xiaomi TV smart devices - run with quite a bit of memory.

The backend

In the past, this was called a hard drive, but today, without exception, they have switched to some kind of flash memory-based solution. Its size basically determines how much space is available to install software, copy or download movies. If you consume the content through a streaming service provider, it does not run from the backup storage, but consumes the frames belonging to the online data volume.

Android TV is a special version of Google's operating system for devices that cannot perform traditional phone operations. First of all, all unnecessary functions were removed from it, which is why it is very fast, and on the other hand, its menu was replaced with tiles that can be easily pressed with a flying mouse. It has a lot of functions that preload content on a ribbon menu - e.g. YouTube, content from streaming providers, radio stations and other music providers - and thus makes the choice easier.

• IMPORTANT! The descriptions often confuse the terms "Android TV box" and "Android TV". The former only means that a smart TV that runs Android should be avoided, while Android TV is a special Android version tailored for smart TVs.
• Only buy a smart TV equipped with normal hardware. Before you buy something, look for Benchmark results.

Where does the smart TV get power from?

It's basically a matter of portability. The box, i.e. box format devices, have a DC connector, you have to plug the power supply here, and the other end into the 230 V network, as in the case of all traditional devices.

TV smart devices with a stick design are often powered by a USB port, and the TV or projector can also drive them. Since the USB Type-C standard was invented, much more power can be transferred through such connectors, if they are "full featured" ports. This means that they can transmit not only signal and image, but also 100 W with the help of the PD standard.
